Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has asked China to use its influence on Russia to end the war in Ukraine. The governments in Beijing and Berlin agree that Russian threats with nuclear weapons are unacceptable, Scholz said on Friday during his first visit to Beijing at a meeting with Prime Minister Li Keqiang. With their use, Russia would cross a red line that the countries of the world would have drawn together.
Scholz described China as a “big country” with responsibility for peace in the world. The Chancellor rejected criticism of his trip. In times of crisis, discussions are even more important. He began his statement by saying, “It is good and right that I am here in Beijing today.”
